Student Counseling | American Hotel Academy

Counseling Services

Counseling is available free of charge to all students registered with the school. The Counseling Service offers you the chance to talk to a professionally trained counselor, in confidence, about any personal problems you may have.

Counseling provides a safe place, separate from your daily life, where you can explore issues or feelings which are causing you difficulty.

The counselor will aim to relate to you in a supportive and purposeful manner and assist you in the task of finding your own way forward. Your use of counseling remains confidential to the service within the limits agreed with your counselor.

What does Student Counseling offer?

Counseling offers a confidential space in which you can talk to a counselor about your concerns. It offers you understanding, a feeling of being listened to, valued and accepted in a non-judgmental way. There is no pressure on you and we’re not here to tell you what to do. Instead, as counselors we aim to help you find your own answers.

Counseling services are available:

– for any student experiencing emotional or psychological difficulties relating to academic, personal or social problems.
– to all students experiencing difficulties with:

– stress & time management
– adjusting to college and campus life
– life transitions and changes
– any degree of depression

– anger
– physical, emotional or sexual abuse
– rape/sexual assault
– thoughts of suicide
– eating and body image concerns
– self-esteem
– loss and grief

– any other feelings that cause discomfort

Whatever your background and whatever your problem we’re here to offer you space and support in a confidential environment to work through your difficulties, as well as help you think more clearly and develop the skills to cope.

All counseling is confidential except when someone is in serious danger. In these rare cases we will discuss any potential break in confidentiality with you.

What is counseling?

Counseling is a process in which the counselor listens in an active and non-judgemental way to the concerns of the person requesting counseling. The client is helped to express feelings about personal difficulties – both recent and long-standing – and to look at ways of working through these. The counselor does not give directive advice but instead tries to help the client arrive at choices which are best for them in their lives.
Counseling at American Hotel Academy may take only one or two sessions or it may continue over a longer period of time depending on the student’s difficulty. A counseling session is usually 1 hour long and has to be scheduled ahead.

Is counseling confidential?

Confidentiality means that what you discuss with your counsellor will be kept private. The identity of the student is safeguarded. If anyone outside the service enquires about a particular student, we explain to them that it is a confidential service and that we cannot comment on whom we are seeing or not seeing. We do listen to the concerns of the enquirer and try to assist them in making their own choices about how to approach or help someone else.

There are exceptional and rare circumstances beyond the boundaries of confidentiality. The counselor will seek to discuss these prior to any disclosure or action. These exceptional and rare circumstances are:
– Where a student is at immediate risk of causing serious harm to themselves or others
– Where Romanian Law requires disclosure
– When the counsellor is summoned as a witness in a Court of Law

If you have any concerns or queries about this information please discuss them with the school counselor.

How can I contact a School Counselor?

You can call the School at 0268455401, between 8.30 AM – 4.30 PM to make an appointment with the Counselor, or email at: ana.leah@americanhotelacademy.ro.
Alternatively, for a brief time, without an appointment, you can approach the counselor anytime you need, the service operates with an Open Door policy. The ‘Open Door’ service is an opportunity for you to briefly meet with a counselor without having to make an appointment. For such a meeting you can come anytime between 8.30 AM – 4.30 PM from Monday to Friday.

How long will I have to wait for an appointment?

Waiting or not, for an appointment will depend on how busy the Counseling Service is. During vacation time it is less busy so you should not have to wait long. In term time however waiting time for a full appointment can vary from one to two weeks. At these times we recommend using the Open Door service.

How can I help someone who I think needs counseling?

Some people need professional help with their difficulties. Where appropriate we recommend that you talk about your concerns with the other person and suggest the idea of counseling or making contact with the Counseling Service. You could also tell them about this web site, where they can find resources for self – help.

Tips & Tricks for making relaxation easier:
– Try to find a warm, quiet and comfortable space to relax.
– Turn off your phone and put a ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign on the door.
– Sit comfortably or lie down.
– If sitting make sure that your back and head are well supported, your legs are uncrossed and your feet are firmly on the ground.
– When you are ready, close your eyes, begin listening to the recording and follow the directions. As you complete the exercise, you can expect your mind to wander a bit-when this happens you can simply re-direct your focus back to the recording.
– During the visualisations you are always in control. Go along with them as much as is comfortable.
– Once you’ve finished, stretch, look around and remain still another minute or two.
– As you become more skilled, try applying the exercises to specific situations that might otherwise be anxiety provoking, such as tests, oral presentations, difficult social situations, job interviews, insomnia and so forth.

Precautions
– Do not practise relaxation exercises whilst driving.
– If you have any significant illness or condition, you are advised to check with your GP before doing these exercises.
